Spiritism
Definition
Communication with demons, wicked spirit creatures (fallen angels), either directly or through human or other medium. These demons often impersonate dead humans. A false practice.
Origin
Practiced by ancient Babylonians, Egyptians and Assyrians.—Isaiah 47:12, 13; Exodus 22:18.
God’s Word Forbids it
Isaiah 8:19, 20 “When they shall to the wizards that chirp and say unto you, Seek to them that have familiar spirits and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? … To the law and to the testimony! If they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.”
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 “There shall not be found with you any one … that uses divination, one that practises augury, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer.”
Leviticus 19:31 “Turn not to them that have familiar spirits, nor unto the wizards; seek them not out, to be defiled by them: I am Jehovah your God.”
Leviticus 20:6, 27 “The soul that turns to them that have familiar spirits, and unto the wizards, to play the harlot after them, I will even set My face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. A man also or a woman that has a familiar spirit . . . shall surely be put to death.”

Christendom Condemned for Such Practices
Revelation 18:23 “No light of a lamp will ever shine in you again,… for by your spiritistic practice all the nations were misled.”
1 Timothy 4:1 “Some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons.”
Practice Brings Destruction
Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, idolatry, practice of spiritism, … As to these things I am forewarning you,. . . that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom.”
Revelation 21:8 “But as for the… murderers and fornicators and those practicing spiritism and
idolaters and all the liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur. This means the second death.”
Also: Revelation 22:15.
Fortunetelling Condemned
Matthew 6:34 “So, never be anxious about the next day, for the next day will have its own anxieties.”
James 4:14 “Whereas you do not know what your life will be tomorrow.”
Proverbs 27:1 “Boast not yourself of tomorrow: for you know not what a day may bring forth.”
Acts 16:16-18 “A certain servant girl with a spirit, a demon of divination,… used to furnish her masters with much gain by practicing the art of prediction. … Paul… said to the spirit: ‘I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour.”
Demonism Condemned
Acts 19:13-20 “Certain ones … who practiced the casting out of demons also undertook to name the name of the Lord Jesus over those having the wicked spirits. . .. But in answer the wicked spirit said to them: ‘I know Jesus and I am acquainted with Paul; but who are you?’ With that the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, got the mastery of the two of them . .. This became known to all,… and a fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus went on being magnified. . . . Indeed, quite a number of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them up before everybody.”
Isaiah 2:6 For you, O Lord, have given up Your people, the family of Jacob, because they are full of the evil ways of the east, and practice divination like the Philistines, and are friends with the children of strange countries.

Astrology Condemned
Jeremiah 10:2 “Thus says Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them.”
Job 31:26-28 “If I have beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness, and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand: this also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have denied the God that is above.”
1 Timothy 6:20 “O Timothy, guard what is laid up in trust with you, turning away from the empty speeches that violate what is holy and from the contradictions of the falsely called ‘knowledge’.”
Astrologers, Tools of Demons
Matthew 2:1-17 “After Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, look! astrologers from eastern parts came to Jerusalem, saying: ‘Where is the one born king of the Jews? For we saw his star… and we have come to do him obeisance.’.. . Then Herod secretly summoned the astrologers and carefully ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearing. … Then Herod … had all the boys in Bethlehem … killed, from two years of age and under.”
Special Revelations Have Ceased
1 Corinthians 13:8-13 “Gifts of prophesying, . . . tongues, . . . knowledge. … will be done away with. For we have partial knowledge and we prophesy partially; but when that which is complete arrives, that which is partial will be done away with…. Now … remain faith, hope, love, these three, but the greatest of these is love.”
See also: Ephesians 4:11-14.
Galatians 1:8 “Even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to you as good news something beyond what we declared to you as good news, let him be accursed.”
Testing Inspired Expressions
1 John 4:1, 2 “Do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world. . .. Every inspired expression that confesses Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh originates with God.”
Revelation 18:13, 14 “I saw three unclean inspired expressions . . . come out of the mouth of the dragon . . . the wild beast and … the false prophet. They are, in fact, expressions inspired by demons and perform signs.”
God’s Word Now Contains God’s Complete Revelations
2 Timothy 3:18, 17 “All Scripture is inspired of God …, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.”
Revelation 22:18, 19 “If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll; and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things which are written about in this scroll.”
Dreams and Visions Not Now Given
Deuteronomy 13:1-5 “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spoke to you, saying, Let us go after other gods, which you hast not known, and let us serve them; you shall not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams.”
Jeremiah 29:8, 9 “Let not your prophets that are among you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely unto you in My name; I have not sent them, says Jehovah.”
Jeremiah 23:25-32 “I have heard what the prophets have said, that prophesy lies in My name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. . . . The prophet that has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the straw to the wheat? says Jehovah. Is not My word like fire? says Jehovah; and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? … I am against them that prophesy lying dreams,… yet I sent them not,. .. neither do they profit this people at all, says Jehovah.”
Ezekiel 12:24, 25 “There shall be no more any false vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel. For I am Jehovah; I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall be performed.”
Jeremiah 14:13-16 Then I said, Ah, Lord God! see, the prophets say to them, You will not see the sword or be short of food; but I will give you certain peace in this place. Then the Lord said to me, The prophets say false words in My name, and I gave them no orders, and I said nothing to them: what they say to you is a false vision and wonder-working words without substance, the deceit of their hearts. So this is what the Lord has said about the prophets who make use of My name, though I sent them not, and say, The sword and need of food will not be in this land: the sword and need of food will put an end to those prophets. And the people to whom they are prophets will be pushed out dead into the streets of Jerusalem, because there is no food, and because of the sword; and they will have no one to put their bodies into the earth, them or their wives or their sons or their daughters: for I will let loose their evil-doing on them.
Zechariah 13:3, 4 And if anyone goes on acting as a prophet, then his father and his mother who gave him life will say to him, You may not go on living, for you are saying what is false in the name of the Lord; and his father and his mother will put a sword through him when he does so. And it will come about in that day that the prophets will be shamed, every man on account of his vision, when he is talking as a prophet; and they will not put on a robe of hair for purposes of deceit.
