Spirit, as translated from ru’ahh in the Hebrew and pneu’ma in the Greek: The simplest or elementary meanings of both original words are to describe something wind-like, that is, something that is not visible but which nevertheless produces visible or perceptible results. Both are drawn from root verbs meaning “to breathe” or “to blow”. “Spirit” as used in the Bible has at least seven different senses or applications of meaning to describe something wind-like, viz., as applying to (1) Jehovah God, (2) Christ Jesus, (3) angels, (4) life force, (5) mental disposition, (6) inspired expression and (7) active force of God. This variety of applications is possible in that all are wind-like, all are invisible to the human eye and yet all produce effects that are visible, as the elementary meaning of the original words indicates.

1. Jehovah God, the Unseen, Invisible Spirit, Source of Visible Created Things

John 4:24 “God is a Spirit, and those worshiping Him must worship with spirit and truth.”

2 Corinthians 3:17, 18 “Now Jehovah is the Spirit; and where the spirit of Jehovah is, there is freedom. And all of us, while we with unveiled faces reflect like mirrors the glory of Jehovah, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, exactly as done by Jehovah the Spirit.”

2. Christ Jesus as Spirit, the Express Image of God, Divine, Immortal, Unseen

1 Corinthians 15:45 “It is even so written: ‘The first man Adam became a living soul.’ The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”

1 Timothy 3:16 “Indeed, the sacred secret of this godly devotion is admittedly great: ‘He was made manifest in flesh, was declared righteous in spirit, appeared to angels, was preached about among nations, was believed upon in the world, was received up in glory.’ “

1 Peter 3:18 “Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous person for unrighteous ones, that He might lead you to God, He being put to death in the flesh, but being made alive in the spirit.”

3. Angels, Celestial Creatures, Higher and Mightier than Men

1 Kings 22:21, 22 “And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him. And Jehovah said unto him, How? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And He said, You shall entice him, and shall prevail also: go forth, and do so.”

Isaiah 31:3 “Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit: and when Jehovah shall stretch out His hand, both he that helps shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, and they all shall be consumed together.”

Hebrews 1:7, 14 “Also with reference to the angels He says: ‘And He makes His angels spirits, and His public servants a flame of fire.’ Are they not all spirits for public service, sent forth to minister for those who are going to inherit salvation?”

Psalm 104:4 “He makes winds His angels, and flames of fire His servants.”

Though invisible, able to produce visible results

Job 4:15 “Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.”

Zechariah 6:5 “And the angel answered and said to me, These are the four winds [“spirits”] of heaven, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.”

Luke 24:37-38 “But they were terrified, and because they became frightened they were imagining they beheld a spirit. So He said to them: ‘Why are you troubled … ? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; feel Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones just as you behold that I have.’ “

Refers also to wicked, rebellious angels

1 Samuel 28:7, 8 “Then Saul said to his servants, Seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at En-dor. And Saul… came to the woman by night: and he said, Divine unto me, I pray you, by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomsoever I shall name to you.”

4. Life Force, in Earthly Creatures, the “Principle of Life” Sustained by Breathing

All go to one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. Who knows the spirit of man whether it goes upward, and the spirit of the beast, whether it goes downward to the earth?”

Ecclesiastes 12:7 “And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

1 John 4:1-3 “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression [“every spirit”], but test the inspired expressions [“test the spirits”] to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world. 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 “For example, to one there is given through the spirit speech of wisdom,… to another discernment of inspired utterances [“of spirits”].”

7. Active Force

Jehovah’s invisible energizing force (greater than atomic energy) that produces visible results in many manifestations experienced by men

Creation. Visible manifestation of God’s handiwork through invisible active force in their formation

Isaiah 63:11, 12 “Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying, Where is He that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? 1 Corinthians 2:10, 13 “For it is to us God has revealed them through His spirit, for the spirit searches into all things, even the deep things of God. John 3:3-8 “In answer Jesus said to him: ‘Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus said to Him: ‘How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born, can he?’ Jesus answered: ‘Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born from water and spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. What has been born from the flesh is flesh, and what has been born from the spirit is spirit. Do not marvel because I told you, You people must be born again. The wind [pneu’ma, Greek, elsewhere translated “spirit”] blows where it wants to, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone that has been born from the spirit.’ “

Baptism. The invisible active force giving manifestation that one has been baptized into the body of Christ, thus sharing jointly with all members regardless of differing offices

For truly by one spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink one spirit.”

Anointing. Manifestation to a member of Christ’s body that he has been commissioned to office as a preacher

But you also hoped in Him after you heard the word of truth, the good news about your salvation. By means of Him also, after you believed, you were sealed with the promised holy spirit, which is a token in advance of our inheritance, for the purpose of releasing by a ransom God’s own possession, to His glorious praise.”

Ephesians 4:30 “Also do not be grieving God’s holy spirit, with which you have been sealed for a day of releasing by ransom.”
